For Forest Landowners

In the Southeastern United States, private forest owners comprise a substantial portion of total forest land. For instance, About 61 percent of North Carolina’s 18 million acres of forests are owned by private individuals. However, although private forest owners are a vital group, forest owners in the Southeastern United States have had little engagement with offset markets to date. As such, private forest owners in the Southeastern United States represent untapped potential for engagement in forest offset projects.

Engaging private forest owners in offset projects can support carbon storage and sequestration, forest health and retention in the Southeastern United States, enhance the recreational and intergenerational value of forest land, and provide additional income for families. Currently, however, private forest land owners remain a largely understudied group, with varying land use preferences and forest ownership objectives that may not align with current compliance and voluntary offset protocols.

The OFFSET workshop is particularly interested in engaging with and learning from private forest owners and, as such, has a travel allowance available to offset travel costs to the workshop. If you are interested, see the column to the left and contact a team member for more information.
